A Guarded Saco Beach Between the Crowds
Bayview Beach sits along the long arc of Saco Bay, on the stretch of sand that runs between the Kinney Shores neighborhood and Ferry Beach State Park. It is a city-run beach, guarded in summer, and it gives you the broad, flat, walkable sand that Saco Bay is known for without the boardwalk bustle of Old Orchard Beach a few miles up the shore. For families and dog owners who want a real sand beach with lifeguards and restrooms but a calmer scene, it is a solid choice.
The beach is part of the continuous Saco Bay sand that stretches for miles, so at low tide it opens into a vast flat expanse perfect for long walks, sandcastle building, and chasing the waterline out. The city of Saco staffs it with lifeguards through the core summer season, maintains restrooms, and provides accessibility features, including mats at the main entrance and a beach wheelchair available on request from Parks and Recreation.
The Beach
Bayview is classic southern-Maine beach sand: wide, firm, and gently sloping into the surf. The waves are usually moderate, bigger on a windy day, and the water is the typical Gulf of Maine cool that warms enough in the shallows for comfortable summer swimming. With lifeguards on duty in season, it is a reassuring place to bring kids into the water.
Because Saco Bay is one long beach, you can walk from Bayview toward Ferry Beach State Park in one direction or toward Kinney Shores and Goosefare Brook in the other, making it easy to stretch a beach day into a long shoreline ramble. The dunes behind the beach are protected habitat, including for nesting piping plovers, so stay on the sand and off the dune grass.
At low tide Saco Bay’s sand turns into a huge flat expanse. From Bayview you can walk a long way in either direction, toward Ferry Beach or Kinney Shores, with hard-packed sand underfoot. Check the tide and time a walk for the drawdown.

Parking & Access
Bayview Beach offers both daily paid parking and seasonal permit parking. Permits are sold at Saco City Hall on Main Street and at the Police Department. Restrooms are open during the summer months. The beach has accessibility mats at the main entrance, and a beach wheelchair can be reserved by contacting Saco Parks and Recreation. As with all Saco beaches, parking is limited and fills on hot weekends, so come early.
Dogs are welcome at Bayview, which is one of its draws, but there are seasonal rules. From April through September, dogs must be leashed to no more than 12 feet and kept at least 100 feet from any piping plover nesting sites, a measure to protect the threatened shorebirds that nest in the dunes. Outside that window the rules relax, but always clean up after your dog.
If you visit Saco’s beaches regularly through a summer, a seasonal parking permit from City Hall quickly pays off over daily fees and covers the city’s beach parking. It saves you fumbling for daily payment on every visit.
Getting There
From I-95, take the Saco exit and follow Route 9 (Seaside Avenue) toward the coast. Bayview Beach is at the intersection of Bayview Road and Seaside Avenue. The drive from downtown Saco is about 10 minutes, and from Portland it is roughly 30 minutes via I-95 and Route 9. Watch for beach parking signs as you near the shore.
