The Best View for the Least Effort in the Belgrades

If we had to name one hike that gives you the most reward for the smallest amount of work in central Maine, French Mountain would be near the top of the list. The climb is short, the grade is gentle, and the payoff is an open granite ledge that looks straight down over Long Pond and out across the Belgrade chain of lakes. We have brought first-time hikers, grandparents, and small kids up this trail, and everyone makes it to the view.

French Mountain sits in the little town of Rome, just minutes from Belgrade Lakes village. At 716 feet, it is no giant, but its summit ledge clears the treetops at exactly the right spot. From up there the water spreads out below you, dotted with islands and ringed by forested hills. It is the kind of view people drive across the western mountains to find, and here you reach it in about twenty minutes of walking.

The Trail

French Mountain is part of the Kennebec Highlands, the largest block of conserved land in central Maine, protected and maintained by the 7 Lakes Alliance. The preserve keeps the trail well marked and the trailhead easy to find, which is a big reason this hike stays so popular with families.

The main route is a short out-and-back of roughly 0.6 miles round trip with about 300 feet of climbing. You start in a mixed hardwood forest, cross a few stretches of exposed root and rock, and climb steadily but never steeply. Within fifteen to twenty minutes you break out onto the open ledge that everyone comes for. That ledge is the high point of the trip in every sense, with the whole sweep of Long Pond laid out below.

There is also a loop option. Rather than turning around at the ledge, you can continue along the trail as it swings back down through the woods to rejoin the path near the trailhead. The loop adds a little distance and keeps you moving in one direction, which kids tend to like. Either way you are looking at a quick, low-commitment outing.

The footing is the main thing to watch. The trail has roots and rock slabs that get slick when wet, so trail shoes or light hiking boots with decent grip make the climb more comfortable than sneakers.

Getting There

French Mountain is on Watson Pond Road (Route 225) in Rome, just west of Belgrade Lakes village. From Belgrade Lakes, take Route 27 north a short distance, then turn onto Route 225 west and watch for the marked 7 Lakes Alliance trailhead and small gravel parking area on the side of the road.

The lot is small, with room for only a handful of cars, which fills up fast on summer weekends and during foliage season. Parking is free. There are no restrooms or other facilities at the trailhead, so plan accordingly before you head out.

From Portland the drive runs about 90 minutes up I-95 and over to the Belgrade Lakes area. From Bangor it is closer to 75 minutes. The roads are paved right to the trailhead, so any vehicle can make it.

When to Visit

French Mountain is good in spring, summer, and fall. Spring brings green-up and running water in the woods, though the trail can be muddy and the black flies are out in force from late May into June. Summer is the classic season, with warm rock at the ledge and the lakes full of boats below. Fall is arguably the best of all, when the hills around Long Pond turn gold and red and the cooler air keeps the bugs down.

The ledge faces the water to the west and northwest, which makes French Mountain a favorite sunset hike. Because the climb is so short, you can leave the trailhead with less than an hour of daylight and still make it up in time to watch the sun drop behind the hills.

Local's Tip

This is the local go-to for an easy sunset. We like to time it so we reach the ledge twenty minutes before sundown, then sit on the warm rock and watch the light change over Long Pond. Bring a headlamp for the short walk back down once the colors fade, since the woods get dark fast under the canopy even when the sky is still bright.

Tips

French Mountain is one of the easiest hikes to do with kids in the whole region. The distance is short enough that little legs can handle it, the climb is interesting without being scary, and the open ledge gives everyone a clear goal and a great place to snack with a view. We tell families it is a perfect first real hike.

A few things make the trip smoother. Bring water even though the hike is short, since the ledge gets hot and exposed in summer. Pack bug spray in late spring and early summer, when the black flies and mosquitoes can be relentless in the woods. And keep dogs leashed or under close voice control on the ledge, where the drop-off is real.

Mind the Ledge Edge

The summit ledge has open rock with a real drop-off below the viewpoint. Keep children and dogs back from the edge, especially when the rock is wet or icy. The view is best enjoyed sitting a comfortable distance from the lip rather than walking right up to it.

Go Early or Midweek

The tiny trailhead lot fills quickly on summer weekends and peak foliage days. If you want to avoid parking on a narrow road shoulder, arrive before mid-morning or plan your hike for a weekday. A sunset visit on a weeknight is often the quietest time of all.
