Two Miles of Sand Without the Crowds

Fortunes Rocks Beach stretches roughly two miles along the open Atlantic in Biddeford, running from Biddeford Pool at the south end to the Fortunes Rocks community at the north. It is one of the longest sandy beaches in southern Maine and, despite its size, remains far less crowded than Old Orchard Beach or the busier tourist beaches to the south. The University of New England campus sits near the northern end, and the surrounding neighborhood is primarily residential, giving the beach a quieter, more local feel.

The sand is fine-grained and the beach faces the open ocean, catching swells that make it one of the better surfing and bodyboarding spots along the southern Maine coast. Steady waves, open water, and ample room to spread out attract surfers, skimboarders, and swimmers who appreciate a beach that has not been commercialized.

The Beach

At low tide, the beach widens considerably and the firm, wet sand is excellent for walking. You can cover the full two miles in about 45 minutes at a steady pace, with views of the open ocean to one side and the dunes and beach houses of Fortunes Rocks to the other. Biddeford Pool, a small fishing village at the southern end, has a harbor, lobster boats, and a rocky shoreline that contrasts nicely with the sand.

The waves here are consistent and approachable. On moderate swell days, the beach break produces clean, rideable waves that work well for surfing, bodyboarding, and skimboarding. Beginners can find manageable waves near the center of the beach, while more experienced surfers work the outside breaks.

Currents and Undertow

Fortunes Rocks faces the open Atlantic and can develop strong currents, especially during outgoing tides and after storms. Swim near the lifeguard stations when staffed, and pay attention to water conditions. Rip currents form near the rocky outcrops at the ends of the beach.

The water temperature ranges from the low 50s in June to the low 60s in August. Cold by southern standards, but typical for Maine. Most people wade and splash. Surfers wear wetsuits from fall through spring.

Pro Tip

The best surfing conditions at Fortunes Rocks come with a south or southeast swell and offshore northwest winds. Check the forecast before driving out. Fall brings the most consistent swells and cleaner conditions.

Parking and Access

Parking is the main logistical challenge at Fortunes Rocks. All parking along Fortunes Rocks Road is by permit only during the summer season. Permits are available from the Biddeford City Clerk’s office at City Hall. Without a permit, you risk a ticket.

Parking spaces are available at the southern and northern ends of the beach via Fortunes Rocks Road. The spots are striped along the road and fill up on hot summer days. There is no large public lot.

Lifeguards are on duty during the summer season when tides permit beach access. Portable restrooms are available seasonally.

Local's Tip

If you are visiting Fortunes Rocks for the first time, stop at Biddeford City Hall to pick up a daily or seasonal beach parking permit. It is a quick process and saves you the hassle of a parking ticket. Off-season, parking is generally unrestricted and the beach is wide open.

Biddeford Pool, the small village at the south end of Fortunes Rocks Beach, is worth a visit.
