Kennebunk’s Beach for Young Families
Mother’s Beach is the southernmost of the three beaches strung along Beach Avenue in Kennebunk, after Gooch’s Beach and Middle Beach. The name fits. Of the Kennebunk beaches, this is the one built for families with small children. It is a compact, sandy pocket maybe a few hundred feet long, tucked into a cove that softens the surf, with a public playground right behind the sand and tide pools forming among the rocks at the edges. Parents can set up where they can see the water, the playground, and the kids all at once.
The beach faces a sheltered cove rather than the open ocean, so the water is calmer here than at the longer, more exposed Kennebunk beaches up the road. That makes it a gentle place to learn to swim or wade. Lifeguards are on duty through the core summer season, and an ADA-compliant Mobi-Mat runs across the sand with beach wheelchairs available through the town’s Parks and Recreation department, making this one of the more accessible beaches on the southern coast.
The Beach
The sand at Mother’s Beach is soft and the cove shape keeps the waves modest, which is exactly why families gravitate here. At low tide, rocky areas at the margins of the beach hold tide pools where kids can hunt for crabs, periwinkles, and small fish. It is a genuine, kid-sized natural attraction that keeps children busy long after they have tired of the water.
The playground behind the beach is the other anchor. Between the sand, the pools, and the swings, a family can spend a whole day here without anyone getting restless. The water is southern-Maine cold but warms enough in the shallows on a hot July or August day for comfortable wading and swimming.
The tide pools at the rocky edges of Mother’s Beach are best at low tide, when the water drops and the pools fill with crabs and small marine life. Check a Kennebunk tide chart and aim your visit around low water if you have curious kids.

Parking & Access
A beach parking pass is required to park at all the Kennebunk beaches, including Mother’s Beach. Passes come in daily, weekly, and seasonal forms and are sold at kiosks on the beach or at Kennebunk Town Hall. There is no free parking, and the lots and roadside spaces are limited, so they fill on hot weekends. Restrooms are available, the Mobi-Mat provides accessible sand access, and beach wheelchairs can be reserved through Parks and Recreation.
Dogs are allowed on Mother’s Beach with seasonal restrictions. From June 15 through Labor Day, dogs are only permitted before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m., and must be under voice control or leashed. Outside that summer window, dogs are allowed during the day but still must be controlled or leashed.
Buy your parking pass before you arrive at the beach, either online or at Town Hall, to skip the kiosk line on busy mornings. And if Mother’s Beach parking is full, Gooch’s Beach a short way north covers the same pass and has more sand to spread out on.
Getting There
From the center of Kennebunk, follow Route 35 (Sea Road) south toward the water, then turn onto Beach Avenue. Mother’s Beach is at the south end of the beach strip, past Gooch’s and Middle beaches. The drive from downtown Kennebunk is about 10 minutes, from Portland roughly 35 minutes via I-95 and Route 35, and the beach is well signed once you are on Beach Avenue.
When to Visit
Spring
Quiet and cool. Nice for a walk and dog time under the off-season rules. Water too cold to swim and the playground sees light use.
Summer
Lifeguards on duty, warmest water, and the playground and tide pools at their busiest. Buy a parking pass and arrive early on hot weekends.
Fall
Warm September days still allow swimming, and crowds thin after Labor Day. Pleasant, mild beach walking.
Winter
Empty and bracing. A good cold-weather stroll with the dog. No swimming or lifeguards.
