Oceanfront Camping on a Working Farm

Wolfe’s Neck Oceanfront Camping sits on 626 acres of coastline along Casco Bay in Freeport, just 25 minutes north of Portland. The campground is run by Wolfe’s Neck Center, a nonprofit dedicated to sustainable agriculture and education. That means your campsite fees support a working organic farm, not a corporate campground chain.

The property has 4 miles of oceanfront, over 100 campsites spread across four distinct camping areas, and a range of accommodations from primitive tent sites to fully furnished oceanfront cabins. You can wake up watching lobster boats work the bay, walk down to the farm to meet the cows, and drive into Freeport for lunch at L.L.Bean in the same morning.

This is one of the few campgrounds in Maine where you get genuine oceanfront access without sacrificing convenience. Portland, Freeport shopping, and Bradbury Mountain State Park are all within a short drive. It works for families who want camping with a safety net and for experienced campers who want ocean views without driving four hours north.

The Four Camping Areas

The campground is divided into four areas, each with a distinct personality. Where you camp changes the experience.

East Bay is the most developed area. Sites have water and electric hookups plus WiFi access. This is where you go if you want to charge your phone, run a small fridge in your camper, or let the kids stream something on a rainy afternoon. The sites face the bay with good water views.

Middle Bay is the most scenic area in the entire campground. The sites are more primitive with no hookups, but the views make up for it. This peninsula juts out into Casco Bay with water visible on both sides from some spots.

Best Single Site

Site #320 in Middle Bay sits on a point with panoramic views of Casco Bay in nearly every direction. It is one of the best individual campsites in southern Maine. Book it as early as possible because people who have stayed there once always try to get it again.

West Bay is designed for families. There is a playground, the sites are closer together for a more social feel, and the farm is a short walk away. If you have kids under 10, this is the area to pick.

Quiet Cove is a walk-in area with a 24-hour quiet zone, restricted to adults only. No generators, no loud conversations after dark, no kids running between sites. If you want to read a book by the ocean in peace, this is it.

Cabins and Comfort Camping

Beyond traditional tent and RV sites, Wolfe’s Neck offers several step-up options for people who want the setting without sleeping on the ground.

A-Frame Cabins are basic structures with a roof, walls, and a platform. You bring your own bedding and gear. They keep the rain off and give you a solid floor.

Oceanfront Cabins ($225-350/night) are the premium option. Furnished with beds, a small kitchen area, and a porch overlooking Casco Bay. These book out quickly for peak weekends and are worth the price if you want a cabin-on-the-ocean experience without owning waterfront property.

Comfort Camping provides a pre-set tent with cots, sleeping pads, and basic gear. Good for first-timers who want to try camping without buying equipment.

L.L.Bean “Wicked Easy Camping” is a partnership with the Freeport retailer. You show up and everything is set up for you: tent, sleeping bags, camp chairs, cooking gear, all L.L.Bean equipment. It is camping with training wheels, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Local's Tip

The L.L.Bean Wicked Easy Camping packages sell out fast for summer weekends. If you are considering it, book well in advance. It is a particularly good option for families visiting from out of state who do not want to fly with camping gear.

The Farm

This is what makes Wolfe’s Neck different from every other oceanfront campground. There is a real, working organic farm on the property with cattle, chickens, pigs, and seasonal crops.

The farm offers daily tours where you can see the animals, learn about sustainable agriculture, and watch the farmers work. Kids can visit the barnyard animals, and during summer, the center runs Farm Camp programs for children that combine outdoor education with hands-on farming.

The farm store sells local produce, meat from the farm’s own cattle, eggs, and other goods when available. If you are grilling at your campsite, picking up farm-raised beef to cook over the fire is a hard-to-beat experience.

Farm Smells

You may smell cows from some campsites, especially in West Bay near the farm. It is a working agricultural operation. If the smell of a barnyard bothers you, choose a site in East Bay or Middle Bay where the ocean breeze is more dominant.

Dogs Welcome

Wolfe’s Neck is one of the more dog-friendly campgrounds in the state. Over 100 sites are designated pet-friendly, and dogs are welcome on the trails and in most common areas on leash.

If you are staying in a cabin, there is a $10 per night pet fee. Dogs must be leashed at all times in the campground. The shoreline trails are great for walking dogs, and most dogs love exploring the tidal flats at low tide.

Nearby Things to Do

The location is one of the campground’s biggest strengths. You are close to a lot without being in the middle of it.

Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park is adjacent to the campground. The park has easy hiking trails through old-growth white pines along the shoreline. The Casco Bay Trail leads to views of Googins Island, where ospreys nest every summer. Bring binoculars.

Freeport is minutes away. The L.L.Bean flagship store is open 24 hours and worth a visit even if you are not buying anything. The town has dozens of outlet stores, good restaurants, and the kind of walkable downtown that works for a rainy afternoon.

Portland is 25 minutes south. Restaurants, breweries, the Old Port, ferries to the islands, the Portland Museum of Art. You could day-trip to Portland and be back at your campsite for dinner.

Bradbury Mountain State Park is about 15 minutes away with a short hike to a summit with views of Casco Bay and the White Mountains on a clear day. Good for a morning hike before the campground beach gets busy.

Military Discount

Wolfe’s Neck offers a 10% discount for active military and veterans on all campsite reservations. Mention it when booking. It applies to tent sites, RV sites, and cabins.
