The Quick Hike Between Bangor and Acadia
Bald Mountain in Dedham sits right along the Route 1A corridor between Bangor and Ellsworth, making it one of the most accessible hikes in the Downeast region. The 2.0-mile round trip climbs a former ski hill to a bald, open summit at 1,261 feet. The views stretch from the Penobscot River valley to Penobscot Bay and, on clear days, all the way to Cadillac Mountain and Mount Desert Island. It is a perfect stretch-your-legs hike if you are driving to or from Acadia.
The Trail
The trail follows an old ski slope road up the mountain. The grade is steady and moderate, gaining about 570 feet over roughly a mile. The trail surface is rocky in places but wide and well-trodden. In summer, blueberry bushes line both sides of the path, and the picking can be excellent in late July.
The summit is open and bald, a legacy of the old ski operation that ran from the 1930s through the 1970s. The lack of trees means unobstructed views in nearly every direction. To the south, Penobscot Bay and the islands are visible. To the west, the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and the river valley. To the east, the hills of the Downeast interior. On exceptional days, Mount Desert Island and the Acadia peaks are visible on the horizon.
Visit in late July for the blueberries. The summit and upper slopes are covered in lowbush blueberry, and the picking is some of the best in the region. Bring a container.
