Ocean Views Without the Camden Crowds
Bald Rock Mountain sits in the Coastal Mountains Land Trust’s Ragged Mountain Preserve, just inland from Camden and Lincolnville on the Midcoast. While most visitors to the area head straight for Mount Battie or Mount Megunticook in Camden Hills State Park, Bald Rock offers something those better-known peaks sometimes lack: solitude.
The hike is short, just 2 miles round trip, but it punches well above its weight. The summit is a broad expanse of open granite ledge with views east over Penobscot Bay, the Camden Hills, and the islands stretching out toward the horizon. On a clear day, you can pick out Islesboro, North Haven, Vinalhaven, and the blue line of the open ocean beyond.
The Trail
The trail begins at the Bald Rock trailhead on Barnestown Road in Lincolnville. From the parking area, the path enters mixed hardwood and softwood forest and climbs steadily for about a mile to the summit. The lower section is moderate, with well-defined trail through the woods. As you gain elevation, the forest thins and you start to catch glimpses of the bay through the trees.
The final push to the summit crosses open granite ledge with scattered pitch pine and blueberry bushes. Cairns and blue blazes mark the route across the rock. The transition from forest to open ledge happens fairly quickly, and the view opens up in a satisfying rush.
The trail gains about 600 feet over the mile of climbing. There are a few steeper pitches with exposed roots and rocks, but nothing technical. Most reasonably fit hikers can reach the summit in 30 to 45 minutes.
The summit ledges face east, which means they are best for morning light over the bay. But the western views behind you catch the sunset beautifully, lighting up the Camden Hills and the inland ridges. The short distance makes this a great after-work or late-afternoon hike where you can catch the golden hour from the top.
The Summit
The summit of Bald Rock Mountain is a wide, gently sloping granite dome with enough room for a dozen people to spread out without crowding. Low blueberry bushes grow in the cracks, and a few wind-bent pitch pines frame the edges. The exposure is mostly to the east and south, with Penobscot Bay dominating the view.
The Camden Hills are directly to the south, and you can see the auto road winding up Mount Battie and the ridge of Megunticook beyond it. To the east, the bay is scattered with islands. Islesboro is the long, narrow island closest to shore. On exceptionally clear days, you can see the mountains of Acadia National Park far to the northeast.
This is an excellent lunch spot. The rock is warm in the sun, the views are constant, and the low elevation means the wind is rarely as fierce as it gets on higher Midcoast peaks.
Bald Rock gets a fraction of the foot traffic that Mount Battie and Megunticook see. On a summer Saturday when the Camden Hills parking lots are full by 9 AM, you can often find the Bald Rock summit empty. It is one of the best-kept secrets in the Midcoast hiking scene.
Getting There
The Bald Rock trailhead is on Barnestown Road in Lincolnville, about 4 miles from the center of Camden. From Route 1 in Camden, take Route 52 (Mountain Street) north and then turn right onto Barnestown Road. The trailhead parking area is on the right, marked with a Coastal Mountains Land Trust sign.
The parking lot holds about 10 to 12 cars. It rarely fills. The trailhead has a kiosk with a trail map but no restrooms.
Camden is a full-service town with restaurants, shops, groceries, and fuel. Lincolnville Beach, about 10 minutes away, has a seasonal ferry to Islesboro and a couple of restaurants.
When to Go
Spring
Wildflowers in the forest. Trail dries out by mid-May. Bay views are often clearest in spring.
Summer
Warm rock for lounging on the summit. Wild blueberries in late July. Can be hazy.
Fall
Foliage on the surrounding hills with the bay below. Cool, clear air gives the longest views.
Winter
Hikeable with microspikes. The exposed summit can be very windy and cold. Short days limit the window.
October is the standout month. The hardwoods on the lower slopes turn color, the air is crisp and clear, and the views over Penobscot Bay are at their best.

FAQ
How long does the Bald Rock hike take?
Most hikers complete the 2-mile round trip in 1 to 1.5 hours, including time on the summit. The trail is about a mile each way with 600 feet of elevation gain.
Is this the same as Ragged Mountain?
Bald Rock Mountain is within the Ragged Mountain Preserve but is a separate peak from Ragged Mountain itself. Ragged Mountain has a ski area on its other side. The Bald Rock trail is a standalone hike.
Are dogs allowed?
Yes, dogs are welcome on the trail. Keep them under control on the summit ledges, especially near the exposed edges. The Coastal Mountains Land Trust asks that dogs be leashed.
How does this compare to Mount Battie?
Bald Rock is a similar difficulty and distance to the foot trail up Mount Battie, with equally good Penobscot Bay views. The main difference is crowds. Mount Battie in Camden Hills State Park gets far more visitors. Bald Rock is quieter and feels more like a wilderness experience.
Is there a fee?
No. The Ragged Mountain Preserve is maintained by the Coastal Mountains Land Trust and is free to visit. Donations to the land trust are appreciated.
