The Highest Peak in the Camden Hills

Mount Megunticook stands 1,385 feet above Camden harbor, the tallest peak in Camden Hills State Park and the highest mainland mountain on the Maine coast. The wooded summit itself does not have a view, but Ocean Lookout, a wide open ledge a short distance below the true summit, delivers one of the best Penobscot Bay panoramas anywhere in the state.

The classic route is the Megunticook Trail from the state park’s main entrance area. It climbs steadily through mixed hardwood and conifer forest, traverses a series of switchbacks and rock steps, and breaks out at Ocean Lookout with views that stretch from Camden harbor across the bay to the islands of Penobscot Bay and the open Atlantic beyond.

The Megunticook Trail to Ocean Lookout

From the Megunticook trailhead near the state park campground, the trail climbs about 1.0 mile and roughly 1,100 feet to Ocean Lookout. The path is well-maintained, well-signed, and the elevation gain is consistent rather than punishing. Most hikers reach the lookout in 45 minutes to an hour.

The lower section passes through a quiet hardwood forest that lights up in the fall. Higher up the trail steepens and includes some rock-step sections that need attention but no scrambling. The final approach to the lookout opens up gradually until you step out onto the broad granite ledge.

Ocean Lookout itself is the destination for most hikers. The view east takes in Camden harbor below, Curtis Island lighthouse, and the full sweep of Penobscot Bay. On clear days you can see Vinalhaven, North Haven, Isle au Haut, and the distant blue ridge of Acadia on the eastern horizon.

Continuing to the True Summit

The actual summit of Mount Megunticook is a short additional climb beyond Ocean Lookout, but it is wooded and offers no view. Most hikers stop at the lookout, eat lunch, and turn around. If you want the high point for completeness, follow the Ridge Trail past the lookout. Add about 20 minutes round trip.

For a longer day, link the Megunticook Trail with the Tablelands Trail and descend via the Mount Battie auto road area for a loop that covers both major Camden Hills summits.

When to Go

Spring

good

Trail opens early. Expect mud through April and a few days of black flies in May.

Summer

best

Long days and warm coastal breezes. Hike in the morning to beat afternoon haze over the bay.

Fall

best

Peak foliage hits the Camden Hills in early October. Cooler air, clearer views, and the hardwoods on the trail blaze gold and red.

Winter

good

The trail is hikeable in winter with microspikes. Quiet, sharp views over a frozen bay.

October is the season most locals point to. The combination of foliage color in the lower forest and crystal-clear air over the bay is hard to beat. Sunrise from Ocean Lookout is also worth the early start, especially in the cooler months when the sun rises out of the Atlantic directly in front of the ledge.

Practical Tips

Local's Tip

Park at the main Camden Hills State Park entrance off US Route 1 just north of Camden village. The Megunticook trailhead is a short walk from the day-use lot. Avoid the Mount Battie Road parking, which is for the auto road, not the Megunticook Trail.

The state park charges a day-use fee at the entrance gate. Maine residents pay a discounted rate. The fee covers all park facilities for the day, including the auto road up Mount Battie if you want to combine the two for a half-day visit.

Cell service is good throughout the hike and on Ocean Lookout. The trail is dog-friendly on leash. Dogs do well on this terrain, but the rock steps near the top can be tough on smaller pups.
