Katahdin’s Mirror

Daicey Pond is a 35-acre pond deep inside Baxter State Park, sitting at about 1,080 feet elevation in the shadow of Mount Katahdin, Maine’s highest peak. It is one of the most photographed spots in the park, and for good reason: on a still morning, the pond’s surface reflects Katahdin’s ridgeline with a clarity that stops people in their tracks. It is a small body of water with an enormous view.

The pond has a maximum depth of 26 feet and an average of about 10 feet. No motorboats are allowed. This is canoe country. The only sounds are paddles dipping into water, loons calling, and wind in the spruce. Canoe rentals are available at the pond for about a dollar an hour, making this one of the most accessible and affordable wilderness paddling experiences in Maine.

Baxter State Park is a 200,000-acre wilderness preserve with strict rules designed to keep it wild. No pets, no motorcycles, no loud music, no drones. The park takes its wilderness mandate seriously, and Daicey Pond is a place where that philosophy is felt in every detail.

The Cabins

Daicey Pond has 10 rustic cabins along the shoreline, managed by the park. Each cabin has beds, a wood stove for heat, and gas lights. There is no electricity. An outhouse serves each cluster of cabins, and a hand pump provides water. A small library cabin sits near the ranger station.

These are not luxury accommodations. They are authentic Maine woods cabins, the kind of place where you read by gaslight, cook on a camp stove, and fall asleep to the sound of loons.

Reservations are required and competitive. Booking opens in January for the following season, and popular dates sell out quickly. Plan well ahead if you want a summer or fall cabin.

Pro Tip

Request a cabin on the pond’s north shore for the best Katahdin views. Cabins 9 and 10 are the most sought-after positions, offering the classic reflection view at sunrise. Set your alarm early.

On the Water

Canoe rentals at the pond cost about $1 per hour or $8 per day. Life vests are included. The pond is small enough to paddle its entire shoreline in an hour, but the point is not to cover distance. The point is to be still on the water, watching the mountain and the wildlife.

Brook trout inhabit the pond, and fly fishing from a canoe is a Baxter tradition. The fishing is catch-and-release with flies only in many park waters, so check current regulations before you cast. Even if you don’t fish, the trout rising at dusk are part of the show.

Local's Tip

Paddle out at dawn, before other visitors stir. The pond is glassy, the light on Katahdin is soft and warm, and you may have the entire surface to yourself. This is the single best moment Baxter State Park offers, and it requires no hiking.

Hiking From Daicey Pond

The Daicey Pond Nature Trail is a gentle 1.4-mile loop through spruce-fir forest along the pond’s shore. It is flat, well-marked, and suitable for all abilities.

For more ambitious hikers, the Appalachian Trail passes near Daicey Pond. The AT Katahdin approach from the Daicey Pond area follows the Hunt Trail, the oldest and most classic route up Katahdin. It is a strenuous 10.4-mile round trip with over 4,000 feet of elevation gain.

Kidney Pond, another quiet canoe pond with cabins, is a short drive away and worth visiting for a different perspective.
