The First Light in America
Cadillac Mountain stands 1,532 feet above sea level at the heart of Acadia National Park, the tallest point along the North Atlantic seaboard from here to Brazil. From October 7 through March 6 each year, this summit is the first place in the United States to see the sunrise. That distinction has turned the Cadillac sunrise into one of the most iconic experiences in the national park system, and on any clear morning during the season, you will find a crowd gathered on the summit in the predawn darkness, waiting for the light to break over Frenchman Bay.
But Cadillac Mountain is not only a sunrise destination. The summit panorama is extraordinary at any hour. The 360-degree view takes in Frenchman Bay and the Schoodic Peninsula to the east, the Cranberry Isles and open Atlantic to the south, the mountains and lakes of Mount Desert Island below, and the rolling hills of interior Maine to the north and west. It is the single best vantage point in Acadia and one of the finest viewpoints on the entire East Coast.
Getting to the Summit
The Cadillac Summit Road winds 3.5 miles from the Park Loop Road to the summit parking area. The road is paved, two lanes, and well-maintained, with several pulloffs along the way that offer their own impressive views. The drive takes about 15 minutes, and the road gains 1,200 feet from base to top with sweeping switchbacks and open granite sections.
Vehicle reservations are required to drive the Summit Road from May 20 through October 25, 2026. Reservations cost $6 per vehicle and must be purchased in advance at Recreation.gov. They are not available at the park.
There are two reservation types:
- Sunrise reservations allow access from before dawn until about an hour after sunrise. These are extremely popular and sell out quickly. Seventy percent of slots release just two days in advance at 10am ET, which is your best chance.
- Daytime reservations allow access during a specific time window later in the morning or afternoon.
Vehicles over 21 feet, RVs, and trailers are prohibited on the Summit Road.
The Sunrise Experience
Watching the sunrise from Cadillac Mountain is a ritual. People arrive well before dawn, parking in the summit lot and walking the short paved Summit Loop Trail to the eastern-facing ledges. In the final minutes before sunrise, the sky over Frenchman Bay shifts through blues, pinks, oranges, and golds. When the sun clears the horizon, it lights up the bay, the islands, and the granite all at once.
It is genuinely beautiful and worth the early alarm. The experience of standing with a crowd of people from all over the world, all quietly watching the same thing, adds to the moment.
Note that Cadillac Mountain is the first sunrise point only from October 7 through March 6. During the equinox periods, that distinction shifts to West Quoddy Head in Lubec, and in summer it moves to Mars Hill in Aroostook County. But the summit views are spectacular regardless of whether the sunrise is technically the first in the nation.
When to Go
Spring
Summit Road opens mid-April, weather permitting. Cool and often windy. Fewer crowds before the reservation system begins May 20.
Summer
Peak season with the most visitors. Sunrise reservations sell out fast. Warm days but cool summit mornings. Haze can limit views on humid days.
Fall
Clear air and the best visibility of the year. Foliage on Mount Desert Island peaks in mid-October. The first-sunrise season begins October 7.
Winter
Summit Road is closed to vehicles. The mountain can be hiked on foot with proper winter gear. Views are spectacular on clear winter days.
Practical Notes
The summit parking area has accessible restrooms and a small gift shop. A 0.3-mile paved loop trail circles the summit with interpretive signs explaining the geology, ecology, and history of the mountain. The loop is wheelchair-accessible and suitable for all ages.
The granite at the summit is largely pink Cadillac granite, covered in places with sub-alpine plants including cinquefoil, wild blueberries, and low-growing shrubs. Pitch pine and stunted spruce cling to the ledges in gnarled forms shaped by wind.
Acadia National Park entrance fee is $35 per vehicle for a 7-day pass (2026). Annual passes and America the Beautiful passes are also accepted.
Getting There
From Bar Harbor, enter Acadia National Park via the Park Loop Road. Follow signs for Cadillac Mountain. The Summit Road turnoff is well-marked. From Bangor, the drive to Bar Harbor takes about an hour via Route 1A.
