Maine’s Newest Town

Long Island sits in the middle of Casco Bay, about three miles long and one mile wide, home to roughly 220 year-round residents who live in one of the most independent-minded communities in Maine. In 1993, when Portland reassessed property values and taxes tripled, the islanders voted to secede. On July 1 of that year, the Town of Long Island became the first new municipality incorporated in Maine since 1925. That act of self-determination tells you something about the people who live here.

The ferry from Portland takes about 45 minutes, threading through the inner islands of Casco Bay before rounding the point at the north end of Long Island and pulling into the dock. You step off into a community where the cars are few, the roads are quiet, and the primary activities are fishing, walking, and sitting on a porch watching the bay. There is no tourist infrastructure. There is one of the finest beaches in Casco Bay.

South Beach

South Beach (also known as Sandy Beach) is the reason most visitors make the trip. Located at the southern tip of the island, it is a crescent of fine sand that is unusual for the Maine coast, where rocky shores are the norm. The sand here has an unusual property: when you walk on it in the right conditions, it squeaks or “sings” underfoot, a phenomenon caused by the uniformly round quartz grains. It is a strange and delightful effect.

The beach faces south and gets full sun. In midsummer, the water is cold but swimmable for the willing. At low tide, the sand extends and tidal pools form at the edges. It is a beautiful spot for families, beachcombers, and anyone who appreciates a good beach.

The walk from the ferry landing to South Beach takes about 30 to 40 minutes along the island’s main road. Alternatively, you can rent a golf cart or catch a ride from a friendly local.

Local's Tip
The singing sand effect works best when the sand is dry and your feet are clean. Walk slowly and press down firmly. You will feel and hear the sand vibrate under your feet. It does not work on wet sand near the water line.

Walking the Island

Long Island is small enough to cover on foot in a few hours. The main road runs from the ferry dock at the north end to the beach at the south end. Side roads branch off to residential areas and shoreline access points. The terrain is flat and the walking is easy.

Along the way, you pass lobster sheds, small homes, the island’s school, a church, and the town hall. There is a small veterans memorial near the center of the island. The landscape alternates between spruce forest and open views of the bay.

The western shore looks toward Chebeague Island and the mainland. The eastern shore faces the open bay and the outer islands. Both sides have rocky shoreline access if you explore the side roads.

Pro Tip
Take the morning ferry and walk south to the beach. Spend a couple of hours at South Beach, then walk back to the dock in time for an afternoon return ferry. The round trip walk is about 2.5 miles and the road is flat.

A Working Island

Long Island is a year-round fishing community, not a tourist destination. The lobster boats work the bay, the school educates the island’s children, and the town meeting decides the budget. Visitors are welcome, but there are no visitor amenities beyond a small store with limited hours.

Respect the island’s residential character. Stay on roads and public paths. Do not walk across lawns or private property.
