Bridgton is the service center of Maine's Lakes Region, the kind of town where lake culture, mountain recreation, and small-town commerce overlap in a way that works year-round. Highland Lake and Long Lake are right at the doorstep for swimming, fishing, and paddling. Pleasant Mountain (formerly Shawnee Peak), Maine's oldest family-owned ski area, is 10 minutes from downtown and offers night skiing with views that extend to the ocean on clear days. The downtown has been steadily improving, with a renovated movie theater, good restaurants, craft breweries, and shops that serve both tourists and the year-round community.

Spend a day on Highland Lake. The town beach is a great starting point, but the real experience is getting out on the water. Rent a canoe or kayak and paddle the shoreline. Highland Lake is small enough to feel intimate but big enough to explore for hours.

Hike the Ledges Trail on Pleasant Mountain. The same mountain that hosts the ski area has excellent hiking on the other side. The Ledges Trail climbs 3.5 miles round trip through forest and across open granite ledges to the 2,006-foot summit. On clear days, the view stretches to the White Mountains and the ocean.

Try night skiing at Pleasant Mountain. Pleasant Mountain (formerly Shawnee Peak) lights up 19 trails for night skiing, the most in New England. Skiing under the lights with the stars overhead and the cold mountain air is a completely different experience from daytime runs. Lift tickets for the evening session are cheaper too.

Explore downtown. Bridgton’s Main Street has improved steadily over the past decade. Gallery 302 shows local art, Bridgton Books has a well-curated Maine section, and the Magic Lantern theater screens independent and first-run films in a beautifully restored space.

Fish the lakes. Long Lake has excellent bass fishing, Highland Lake offers trout and perch, and the smaller ponds around Bridgton are productive for those willing to explore. In winter, ice fishing shanties dot the frozen lakes.

Lake Access Without a Boat

If you do not have a boat, the town beaches on Highland Lake and Woods Pond offer swimming access. For paddling, several outfitters in the area rent canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards by the hour or day. Long Lake also has public boat launches in Bridgton, Harrison, and Naples.

Local's Tip

The Bridgton Drive-In on Route 302 is one of the last drive-in movie theaters in Maine. Double features on summer nights with the mountains as a backdrop. Bring bug spray and a blanket. It is a throwback experience that kids and adults both love.

Lakes, Mountains, and Year-Round Life

What sets Bridgton apart from many Maine lake towns is that it functions year-round. The summer population swells with camp families and lakeside vacationers, but when they leave, the town does not shut down. Pleasant Mountain draws skiers from Portland and beyond in winter. The restaurants, shops, and services stay open. The result is a town that feels alive in every season, with the kind of community infrastructure that seasonal resort towns often lack.

The Lakes Environmental Association, based in Bridgton, has been monitoring and protecting the region’s lakes since 1970. Their work is a big part of why Highland Lake, Long Lake, and the surrounding waters remain clean and swimmable. The LEA Center on Route 302 has educational exhibits and hosts events throughout the year.

Bridgton vs Naples: which is better for a lake vacation?

Bridgton is more of a year-round town with services, restaurants, and a revitalized downtown. Naples is smaller and more purely a summer lake destination, centered on the Causeway and Long Lake. Bridgton has more to do off the water. Naples has a more casual, vacation-only feel. They are about 10 miles apart on Long Lake.

How far is Bridgton from Portland?

About 45 miles, roughly 50 minutes via Route 302. It is an easy day trip from Portland or a weekend base for exploring the Lakes Region.

Is there good fall foliage near Bridgton?

Excellent. The drive around Highland Lake and Long Lake in early October is beautiful, and the view from Pleasant Mountain summit during peak foliage is one of the best in southern Maine. The reflection of fall color on the lakes adds another dimension.

Can I rent a boat on Long Lake?

Yes. Several marinas and outfitters in the Bridgton and Naples area rent motorboats, pontoon boats, canoes, and kayaks. Long Lake stretches 11 miles and connects to Brandy Pond and Sebago Lake via the Songo Lock, making for extensive exploring.
