A Quick Climb with Big Views

Bald Pate Mountain in South Bridgton is one of the best short hikes in southern Maine. Managed by Loon Echo Land Trust, the 486-acre preserve offers a network of trails leading to an open granite summit at 1,100 feet. The views from the top stretch from Sebago Lake and the foothills in the east to the White Mountains and Mount Washington in the west. For the effort involved, the payoff is hard to beat.

The mountain sits in Cumberland County, about 55 minutes northwest of Portland. It is one of several excellent hikes in the Bridgton area, alongside Pleasant Mountain and Douglas Mountain, making the region a natural destination for a day of hiking.

The Trails

Bald Pate Mountain Preserve has a 6.7-mile trail network with several routes to the summit. The two most popular options are:

Bob Chase Trail / Scenic Loop is the main route. It climbs 0.8 miles from the Route 107 parking area to the summit with about 300 feet of elevation gain. The trail is well-maintained and moderate, with a steady climb through hardwood forest before emerging onto open granite ledges near the top. The round trip on this route is roughly 1.6 miles.

South Face Loop Trail offers a longer option at about 1.5 miles with 370 feet of elevation gain. It approaches from a different angle and provides more time in the woods before reaching the summit area.

Pate Trail is a very steep 0.1-mile direct scramble with 360 feet of gain. It is not recommended as a primary route but can be used to create loop options for experienced hikers.

The summit area is a broad expanse of granite ledge dotted with ancient pitch pine trees. The pitch pine forest on Bald Pate is considered one of the finest examples in the state, with gnarled, wind-shaped trees growing out of cracks in the bare rock.

Pro Tip

The Scenic Loop extension adds views to the south that the main summit trail misses. If you have an extra 20 minutes, it is worth the short detour for the additional perspective over Highland Lake and the foothills.

The Summit

The open summit of Bald Pate is the reward. Sebago Lake, Maine’s second-largest lake, dominates the view to the east and south. On clear days, the White Mountains are visible to the west, including Mount Washington. Pleasant Mountain, the highest peak in Cumberland County, rises to the northwest.

The summit has plenty of room to spread out, find a sunny spot on the granite, and take in the panorama. The pitch pines provide some shade and give the top a distinctive character that differs from the typical Maine summit.

Local's Tip

Bald Pate is one of the best sunset hikes near Portland. The western-facing summit catches golden light in the evening, and the trail is short enough to hike down comfortably with a headlamp. Bring one just in case.

When to Go

Spring

good

Trails dry out relatively quickly. Wildflowers in the lower woods. Can be muddy in early April.

Summer

best

Long days and warm granite on the summit. Bring water and sunscreen for the exposed top.

Fall

best

Foliage is outstanding from the summit. Peak color usually mid-October in the Bridgton area. One of the best leaf-peeping viewpoints in southern Maine.

Winter

good

A great snowshoe hike. Short enough to do on a cold afternoon. The summit is windy but the views of snow-covered peaks are worth the chill.

Practical Notes
