Is Moose Creek Your Kind of Camping?

Most camping around Moosehead Lake asks you to trade comfort for wildness: a gravel pad at a state park, a tent platform reached by boat, a night on the shore with a pit toilet and no bars on your phone. Moose Creek RV Resort inverts that bargain. It opened in May 2022 on 88 acres east of the lake, and it was built from scratch to be a full-service resort: 30- and 50-amp hookups, full sewer, a pool complex, a food-and-music pavilion, a stocked trout pond, and fiber internet at the newer sites. The question is not whether it is nice. It is whether that is the kind of night in the North Woods you came for.

If you tow a big rig, travel with kids, or want a reliable base with real bathrooms, laundry, and Wi-Fi that works, this is one of the easiest places to camp in the region. If your idea of Moosehead is a quiet cove and a loon at dawn, read the honest note below before you book, because Moose Creek is a destination in itself, not a wilderness site.

What’s on the 88 Acres

The RV sites are the core of the property: pull-through and back-in sites with 30- and 50-amp electric and full sewer, spread across a wooded parcel with a network of internal roads and a dog park. There are two bath houses, each with six individual private bathrooms and showers, plus two coin laundry facilities and a well-stocked camp store for whatever you forgot. Internet is unusually good for the North Woods: a mesh network covers the original sites and underground fiber optic serves the newer 100-series sites.

New for the 2025 season, the resort added a designated tent-camping area with electric, water, and Wi-Fi, so this is no longer strictly an RV park. It is still an amenity-first place, though: the recreation area runs to basketball, soccer, a gaga pit, and lawn games, and the pavilion hosts food service and a live-music calendar through the summer.

The Trout Pond and the Pool

The water on-site is a 3.5-acre stocked trout pond, which the resort opens up for fishing and paddling. It is a calm, contained place to put a kayak or canoe in the water and let kids cast for stocked trout without any of the wind or distance that Moosehead itself throws at you. If you want to paddle the pond on your own schedule rather than wait on the lake’s moods, bring a packable paddle. A resort pond is exactly the low-stakes water a lightweight recreational paddle is made for.

The resort also has a pool complex and pavilion, the marketed centerpiece of the property and a genuine draw on a hot July afternoon when the lake is a drive away. Specific pool dimensions and hours are worth confirming with the resort when you book, since they run the pool and pavilion programming on a seasonal schedule.

Dark Skies Over the North Woods

Moose Creek leans hard into its night sky, describing the property as a “Dark Sky Sanctuary offering exceptional quality of starry nights.” That is the resort’s own language rather than a formal DarkSky International certification, so take the label as marketing. The underlying fact is real, though. Greenville sits deep in Piscataquis County with very little light pollution in any direction, and on a clear, moonless night the Milky Way over the pond is the kind of thing suburban campers drive hours to see.

Local's Tip

Plan at least one clear night with no agenda. Walk out to the open ground away from the bath-house lights, give your eyes twenty minutes to adjust, and skip the headlamp. Late summer, after the biggest crowds thin out, tends to give you the darkest, bug-lightest skies of the season.

The honest caveat for the wilderness-minded: Moose Creek is east of Moosehead Lake, not on its shore. You are not stepping out of your rig onto a sand beach with Mount Kineo across the water. What you get instead is a polished, self-contained resort with its own pond, and the big lake as a short drive away. For many families that trade is exactly right; for shoreline purists it is the reason to look elsewhere.

When to Go

Spring

fair

Opens around May. Cool nights, quiet grounds, and black flies through late spring.

Summer

best

Pool, pavilion, and live music in full swing. The busiest and best-programmed stretch, so book early for July and August.

Fall

good

Crisp nights, thinning crowds, and the darkest skies of the year before the October close.

Winter

poor

Closed for the off-season.

Booking Moose Creek

The resort is now taking 2026 reservations, and the sites with underground fiber (the 100-series) and the full-hookup pull-throughs go first for holiday weekends. If Wi-Fi matters to you, ask specifically which sites are on the fiber network rather than the mesh. Seasonal sites are also available if you want to leave a rig in the North Woods all summer.

Getting There

Moose Creek is at 58 East Road in Greenville, on the east side of town away from the main lakefront. From the south, take Route 15 north through Guilford and Greenville, then follow the resort’s directions onto East Road. From Bangor, plan on roughly an hour and three-quarters via I-95 and Routes 7 and 15. The approach is on paved and improved roads suitable for towing a large rig, a real consideration in a region where many campgrounds sit at the end of logging roads.
