Camping on a Working Organic Farm by the Ocean

Recompence Shore Campground sits on the grounds of Wolfe’s Neck Center for Agriculture & the Environment in Freeport, just a few minutes from downtown. The campground occupies a stretch of land along Casco Bay where rolling pastures, organic gardens, and old hardwood forest meet a long, rocky coastline. Camping here is unlike most coastal Maine campgrounds because Wolfe’s Neck is a working farm and education nonprofit, and the experience is shaped by that mission.

The campground has more than 100 sites spread along a network of loops, with options ranging from simple oceanfront tent sites to RV sites with hookups, cabins, and pre-pitched “comfort camping” tents for visitors who want the experience without the gear.

Sites and Setup

The campground’s site mix is unusually broad for southern Maine:

  • Oceanfront tent sites along the Casco Bay shoreline, with direct views and the sound of the water at night
  • Wooded tent sites in the interior loops for guests who prefer shade and shelter from coastal wind
  • RV and trailer sites with electric and water hookups
  • A-Frame cabins sleeping two, in 120-square-foot units
  • Bayview Cabin sleeping four
  • The Cove and Point Senior cabins sleeping six, with cove views
  • Comfort camping with pre-pitched tents already set up on platforms

This range makes the campground a good fit for families with mixed camping experience and for travelers passing through who do not have gear in the car. Comfort camping guests can bring dogs for a small additional nightly fee.

The shoreline at Wolfe’s Neck is rocky and not a sandy swimming beach. Most guests use it for walking, tide pooling, and launching kayaks. The water is cold even in summer.

Wolfe’s Neck Center

Local's Tip

Stay long enough to actually use the farm and the trails. Wolfe’s Neck Center runs a working organic dairy, organic gardens, an education program, and a farm store with produce, eggs, and locally made goods. Guests can wander the gardens, meet the barnyard animals, and walk miles of waymarked nature trails through the woods and fields. Most people who book a single night wish they had stayed two.

The center maintains miles of nature trails that connect the campground to the gardens, the farm store, and the salt marsh and bay shoreline. The trails are open to campers and to day visitors and make the property feel much larger than its acreage suggests.

If you have kids, the barnyard animals and the open farm fields are a draw on their own. Bike rentals and kayak rentals are also available on-site through the center.

When to Go

Late Spring

good

May and early June. Cool nights, the gardens greening up, fewer crowds. Some bugs in the woods.

Summer

best

Peak season. Warm days, long evenings on the bay, full farm operations. Reservations essential.

Early Fall

best

September and early October. Cool nights, harvest underway in the gardens, foliage building, quieter sites.

Late Fall

fair

Cooler weather but the campground winds down for the season. Check current closing date.

September is one of the best windows here. The crowds thin out, the farm is in harvest mode, and the cool nights are perfect for the wood-heated comfort camping tents.

Getting There

Recompence Shore is at 184 Burnett Road in Freeport, off Wolfe’s Neck Road from US Route 1. From Portland the drive takes about 25 minutes. From the Greater Portland area, you can be set up at your site in well under an hour.

Downtown Freeport, including L.L. Bean’s flagship store and the village restaurants, is about 5 minutes away by car. The combination of oceanfront camping plus easy access to a walkable downtown is unusual on the Maine coast and one of the reasons the campground books up.

Reservations

Reservations are required and recommended in advance for peak summer dates. Book online through Wolfe’s Neck Center or call the campground directly. Cabins and oceanfront sites go first.

For current rates, dates, and reservation links, visit the Wolfe’s Neck Center camping page or call (207) 865-9307.

FAQ

Is Recompence Shore the same as Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park?

No. They are next to each other but separate properties. Recompence Shore is the campground at Wolfe's Neck Center, a private nonprofit organic farm and education organization. Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park is a Maine state park with day-use trails. Campers can easily walk or drive between the two.

Are dogs allowed?

Yes. Recompence Shore is pet-friendly across most site types. Dogs must be leashed at all times and owners must clean up after them. A small additional pet fee applies to comfort camping bookings.

Can large RVs stay at the campground?

Yes, the campground has RV sites with electric and water hookups. Check site dimensions when booking, as the property has a mix of small and larger sites.

Is there a beach for swimming?

The shoreline is rocky rather than sandy. Most guests use the shore for walking, tide pooling, and launching kayaks. The water is cold even in midsummer.

How far to downtown Freeport?

About 5 minutes by car. The campground is unusually close to a major downtown for a coastal Maine site, which makes it a popular base for exploring shopping, restaurants, and L.L. Bean's flagship store.
