A Quick Summit Minutes from Freeport

Bradbury Mountain State Park sits on 800 acres in Pownal, Cumberland County, just a few miles from the outlet shops in Freeport and less than 30 minutes from Portland. The summit of Bradbury Mountain is only 484 feet, but the open ledges at the top provide surprisingly good views of Casco Bay and the surrounding countryside. The hike to the top takes about 20 minutes on the shortest route, making this one of the most accessible summit experiences in southern Maine.

Beyond the summit hike, the park has grown into one of the more versatile recreation areas in the region. Over 24 miles of shared-use trails wind through the forest for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. A 35-site campground operates year-round. Local running and mountain biking events use the trails regularly. For a small park near a major population center, Bradbury packs a lot into its acreage.

The Summit Trail

The Summit Trail is the most direct route to the top: about 0.4 miles, gaining roughly 300 feet. It starts from the main parking area and climbs through mixed forest over rock and roots, with a few moderately steep pitches near the top. The final stretch opens onto granite ledges with views to the south and east.

On a clear day, you can see Casco Bay, the islands off Portland, and the distant peaks of the White Mountains to the west. The summit is not dramatic in the way that Maine’s bigger mountains are, but for the amount of effort involved, the payoff is excellent.

Several other trails offer longer routes to the summit or bypass it entirely for loop hikes through the forest. The Northern Loop Trail adds distance and passes through quieter sections of the park. The Tote Road Trail is a wider, more gradual path that works well for families with young children.

Combine with Freeport Shopping

Bradbury Mountain is less than 10 minutes from downtown Freeport. A morning hike followed by lunch and shopping in Freeport is a popular day plan, especially for visitors who want a mix of outdoor activity and the retail experience that Freeport is known for.

Mountain Biking

Bradbury Mountain is the only state park in southern Maine with a dedicated shared-use trail system for mountain biking, horseback riding, and hiking. The trail network covers over 24 miles and ranges from smooth forest roads to rooty singletrack.

The mountain biking draws a regular local crowd, and the park hosts organized rides and races through the season. The terrain is not extreme, but the trail variety and proximity to Portland make it one of the most popular riding spots in the region. Beginner riders can stick to the wider trails, while more experienced riders will find enough technical singletrack to stay interested.

Horses are also permitted on the shared-use trails. Yield to equestrians and announce yourself when approaching from behind.

Local's Tip

The mountain biking community at Bradbury is active and welcoming. Check with local bike shops in Freeport or Portland for group ride schedules. The trails dry out faster than many in the area because of the rocky soil and good drainage on the mountain’s slopes.

Camping

The campground has 35 sites available year-round. Summer sites are wooded and reasonably private. Showers are available in season. Winter camping is permitted but requires advance contact with park staff to make arrangements.

The campground’s proximity to Freeport makes it a practical base for exploring the midcoast region. L.L. Bean’s flagship store is open 24 hours and is less than 10 minutes away. Brunswick, Bath, and the Harpswell peninsula are all within easy driving distance.

Getting There

Bradbury Mountain State Park is on Hallowell Road in Pownal, about three miles west of Route 1 and I-295. From Portland, take I-295 north to exit 22 (Freeport) and follow signs. The drive takes about 30 minutes. From Brunswick, head west on Route 125. The park entrance is well signed.
