A Quiet Pond in the Sebago Lake Region

Hancock Pond sits on the line between Denmark and Sebago, just northwest of big Sebago Lake in the rolling country of western Oxford County. It is the largest pond in the Hancock Brook chain, and its irregular shape and range of depths give it a mix of shallow, weedy coves and deeper open water. The pond reaches about 59 feet at its deepest point, which is enough to hold cold-water fish through the summer while the shallows warm up nicely for swimming.

This is a working camp pond rather than a tourist destination. Seasonal cottages line much of the developed shore, and on summer weekends you will see fishing boats, kayaks, and the occasional floatplane, since there is a small seaplane base on the water. Look west and you get a clean view of the low mountains that ring the Sebago basin, including Pleasant Mountain rising over nearby Moose Pond. The Hancock and Sand Ponds Association keeps an eye on water quality here, so do your part and rinse your hull before you launch.

Fishing

Hancock Pond is best known among local anglers as a brown trout and bass water. The state stocks brown trout, and the deeper basins give them the cold water they need to survive the summer. Spring, right after ice-out, and again in fall are the best windows for trout, when you can troll or cast near the drop-offs and tributary mouths.

Both smallmouth and largemouth bass are present and run to a respectable size, with fish in the three to four pound range turning up around the rocky points and weed edges. Summer is prime bass season, and early morning topwater work along the shoreline structure can be productive. Chain pickerel, white perch, and sunfish round out the warm-water fishery, and rainbow smelt provide forage and a winter target for ice anglers.

Work the Drop-Offs

The pond’s varied bottom is its strength. Find the edges where the shallow coves fall off into deeper water and you will find fish holding there in most seasons. A simple depth finder, or even a paper contour map, helps you target those transitions instead of casting blind across flat shallows.

Paddling and Swimming

Hancock Pond is a comfortable size for a half-day paddle by canoe or kayak. You can launch, hug the quieter undeveloped stretches of shore, poke into the coves, and be back before the afternoon wind picks up. The water is clear, and on calm mornings the reflections of the surrounding hills make for easy, scenic flatwater paddling.

The warm, shallow areas near the launch and along sandy stretches of shore work well for swimming once the surface warms by midsummer. There is no formal swimming beach, so most people just find a sandy or gravelly spot off their own access point. Keep an eye out for boat traffic in the open water on busy weekends.

Local's Tip

The public boat launch is at the intersection of Hancock Pond Road and Swamp Road in Denmark. It is a straightforward hand-carry and trailer access point, but the lot is small. Arrive early on summer weekends if you are trailering a boat, and be courteous about turning around in the tight space.

Getting There

Hancock Pond is in Denmark, in the lakes country west of Sebago. From Portland, take Route 25 west toward Standish and Sebago, then follow local roads north into Denmark; the drive runs a little over an hour. From the Bridgton side, head south on Route 117 and Route 160 toward Denmark village, then watch for Hancock Pond Road.

The public launch is off Hancock Pond Road at its intersection with Swamp Road. Signage is modest, so program your route before you go. Cell service in this part of Oxford County is spotty once you leave the main roads, so download maps ahead of time.

When to Visit

Spring

good

Ice-out usually in April. Prime brown trout fishing near the surface. Black flies and mosquitoes build through late May and June.

Summer

best

Warm water for swimming, good bass fishing, and easy paddling. Busiest season with camp traffic and the occasional floatplane.

Fall

good

Quiet water, cool air, and renewed trout activity. Foliage on the surrounding hills is excellent in early October.

Winter

fair

Ice fishing for trout, bass, and smelt when ice is safe. Verify conditions locally before heading out.

Summer is the all-around best time, with warm water and the most reliable access. Spring and fall are the seasons serious trout anglers favor, when the brown trout are active in the cooler shallows. Bring bug protection from ice-out through early summer.
