Acadia’s Quiet Neighbor

Lamoine State Park sits on 55 acres along the eastern shore of Frenchman Bay in the town of Lamoine, directly across the water from Mount Desert Island. From the waterfront campsites, you look out at Cadillac Mountain, the Porcupine Islands, and the full silhouette of the island that holds Acadia National Park. The views are spectacular, and the campground is a fraction of the size and intensity of the parks inside Acadia.

This is a campground-focused park. There are no dramatic cliffs, no summit hikes, no visitor center. What Lamoine offers is a quiet place to sleep near the ocean, a reliable boat launch, and one of the best vantage points for watching the sun set behind the mountains of Mount Desert Island.

Camping

Lamoine has 62 single-family campsites spread through a mix of wooded and waterfront settings. There are no hookups. This is dry camping with flush toilets, hot showers, a dump station, and a playground.

The waterfront sites (especially sites 58, 59, and 60) are the most coveted spots in the park. They sit directly on the Frenchman Bay shoreline with unobstructed views of Mount Desert Island and Cadillac Mountain. These sites book quickly. Reserve well in advance, especially for summer weekends.

The wooded interior sites are more sheltered and private, surrounded by trees. They do not have water views but are closer to the restrooms and playground. For families with young children, the interior sites offer a more contained campsite.

All sites accommodate tents and RVs (though there are no hookups). Campsite fees run roughly $35 to $45 per night depending on the site.

Reserve Waterfront Sites Early

The waterfront sites at Lamoine fill months in advance for summer dates. Maine state park reservations open on a rolling basis, typically 120 days before the arrival date. Set a reminder and book as soon as your date opens. The waterfront sunset views are worth the planning.

Boat Launch

Lamoine has an all-tide boat launch, which is a significant feature. Many boat launches on the Maine coast are tidal, meaning they are only usable within a few hours of high tide. The Lamoine ramp works at any tide level, making it a reliable put-in for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboats.

The launch provides direct access to Frenchman Bay, with paddling options that include the Porcupine Islands, the shoreline of Mount Desert Island, and the open waters of the bay. Kayakers can reach Bar Island (accessible on foot only at low tide from Bar Harbor) or paddle along the eastern shore of MDI.

The boat launch area has parking for vehicles with trailers. During summer, the launch sees steady use from both campers and day visitors.

Cold Water and Tidal Currents

Frenchman Bay has cold water (50-60 degrees in summer) and significant tidal currents, especially near the Porcupine Islands and the Bar Harbor shoreline. Kayakers and canoeists should check tide and current charts before paddling. A dry suit or wetsuit is recommended for early and late season paddling.

Day Use

Lamoine is also open for day use, with picnic tables, grills, and waterfront access. The short trail network (about 1 mile total) loops through the park with views of the bay. This is not a hiking destination, but the trails are pleasant for a post-lunch walk.

The rocky shoreline is good for beachcombing and tidal pool exploring at low tide. The beach is cobble and rock, not sand.

Local's Tip

Lamoine is not on Mount Desert Island, so you are driving about 25 to 30 minutes to the main entrance of Acadia National Park. The trade-off is a quieter campground, lower fees, and easier access to the mainland. For visitors who want to explore Acadia during the day and sleep without the crowds at night, Lamoine is an excellent base camp.

Practical Notes
