The Wild North End of Baxter

North Traveler Mountain sits at the far northern end of Baxter State Park, miles from the crowds at Katahdin. At 3,152 feet, it rises above treeline into alpine terrain with sweeping views of some of the most remote country in the eastern United States. The 5.0-mile round trip from South Branch Pond Campground is steep, demanding, and deeply rewarding. If you want to feel like you are in real wilderness, this is where to go.

The Trail

The hike starts at South Branch Pond Campground, accessed from the Matagamon Gate at the park’s northeast entrance. Follow the North Traveler Trail north from the campground. The trail climbs steadily through dense boreal forest for the first couple of miles, crossing a few small streams.

Above 2,500 feet, the trees thin and the trail breaks onto open alpine terrain. The final push to the summit is across rocky, wind-exposed ridgeline with panoramic views in every direction. The summit itself is a broad, bare cap of rock and low scrub.

Heads Up

North Traveler is exposed to severe weather above treeline. Conditions can change rapidly. Turn back if thunderstorms approach. Bring warm layers even in summer, as the summit is significantly colder and windier than the trailhead.

Summit Views

The top of North Traveler looks out over a landscape that stretches to the horizon in every direction. To the south, the full Traveler Range extends toward Pogy Notch. Katahdin and the park’s central peaks are visible on clear days. To the north and east, the unbroken forest of northern Maine rolls away toward Aroostook County and the Canadian border. There are no roads, no towns, and almost no human presence visible from this summit.
