Acadia’s Warm Water Secret

Most visitors to Acadia National Park head to Sand Beach on the ocean side, where the water hovers in the 50s even in August. Echo Lake, on the quieter western side of Mount Desert Island, is the freshwater alternative. At 237 acres with a maximum depth of 66 feet, it sits between Beech Mountain and Acadia Mountain, tucked into a valley south of Somesville along Route 102.

The swimming beach at Echo Lake’s southern end is the most popular freshwater swimming spot on the island. The water is warmer than the ocean by a wide margin, reaching the low to mid-70s by midsummer. A small, sandy beach slopes gently into a roped-off swimming area, and lifeguards are on duty from May 15 through September 15.

Echo Lake has a 10-horsepower motor limit, which means no large motorboats, no jet skis, and no wake-related noise. Small boats can launch from Ike’s Point along Route 102. Kayaks and canoes are the most common watercraft, and the lake’s size makes it manageable for a morning paddle.

The Beach

Echo Lake Beach is a National Park Service facility. Parking is free with a valid Acadia park pass. The beach is compact, with a sandy shoreline backed by a grassy picnic area and restrooms. It fills up on hot summer days, especially by mid-morning on weekends.

The water clarity is excellent. You can see the bottom in the swimming area, and the sandy entry makes it comfortable for children. The temperature difference from the ocean is dramatic, and families who have been shivering at Sand Beach often end up here instead.

Pro Tip

Arrive before 10 AM on summer weekends to secure parking. The lot is small and fills quickly. Alternatively, visit on weekday afternoons when the beach crowd thins. September, after Labor Day, is one of the best times: warm water, fewer people, and fall color starting on the surrounding hills.

Paddling and Fishing

Small watercraft can launch from Ike’s Point on the east shore along Route 102. There is no formal ramp, but kayaks and canoes can be carried to the water easily. The paddle north toward Somesville is scenic, with views of Beech Mountain to the west and Acadia Mountain to the east.

Brook trout and landlocked salmon inhabit the lake. Fishing from a canoe or kayak is permitted with a valid Maine fishing license. The deeper water in the central basin holds salmon in summer, while brook trout patrol the shallower edges and near tributary inflows.

Local's Tip

Paddle to the north end of Echo Lake on a calm evening. The views looking south toward the mountains are gorgeous, and the north end is far enough from the beach to feel genuinely quiet. Loons are often on the water at dusk.

Hiking Nearby

Echo Lake sits at the base of several excellent Acadia hikes:

Beech Mountain (1.2 miles round trip) offers a fire tower summit with panoramic views of Echo Lake, Long Pond, and the western mountains. It is one of the shorter summit hikes in Acadia.

Acadia Mountain (2.5 miles round trip) is a moderate hike with views of Somes Sound, the only fjord on the US Atlantic coast.

Beech Cliff Loop (0.8 miles) is a short ladder trail to cliff-top views directly over Echo Lake. Not for those with a fear of heights, but the view is spectacular.

An Acadia National Park pass is required. A 7-day vehicle pass costs $35. An annual pass is $70. The America the Beautiful interagency pass also works.
