Acadia’s Smallest Summit, Big Reward
Flying Mountain is the lowest named summit in Acadia National Park at just 284 feet, and the hike to the top is one of the shortest in the park. But do not dismiss it. The 1.5-mile loop packs a surprising punch: ocean views from the summit, a descent to the rocky shore of Valley Cove, and a peaceful walk back through the woods. For families, first-time hikers, or anyone looking for a quick leg-stretcher, Flying Mountain is one of the best short hikes in Maine.
The Trail
Start at the Fernald Point Road parking area near the southern end of Somes Sound. The trail climbs south through mixed forest for just 0.3 miles to the summit. The grade is moderate and the footing is good, with a few rocky sections near the top. The ascent takes about 15 minutes at a comfortable pace.
The summit has an open overlook facing south over Valley Cove and the mouth of Somes Sound. The Cranberry Isles are visible offshore, and on clear days you can see across to the mainland.
From the summit, the trail descends steeply to Valley Cove, a sheltered rocky beach with cold, clear water. This is a great spot to rest and explore the shoreline. The trail then follows the Valley Cove fire road back to the parking area.
The Valley Cove section of this loop may be closed from March 15 through August 15 for peregrine falcon nesting. When the closure is in effect, hike to the summit and return the same way for a 0.6-mile out-and-back.
When to Go
Spring
One of the first trails to dry out in the park. Valley Cove section may be closed for falcon nesting starting March 15.
Summer
Valley Cove section may still be closed through mid-August. When open, the cove is a beautiful spot to cool off.
Fall
Full loop is open. Foliage colors the forest and the views over Somes Sound are crisp.
Winter
Short enough to be a pleasant winter walk. Microspikes helpful near the summit.
Practical Notes
After the hike, drive into Southwest Harbor for lunch. The town has several good restaurants and is far less crowded than Bar Harbor.
Dogs are allowed on leash. There are no restrooms at the trailhead. The parking area is small but rarely fills, even in peak season. This is one of the few Acadia hikes where parking is almost never a problem.
