A Quick Stop in Rangeley Village

Dingley Falls is a small cascade tucked into a park setting near downtown Rangeley, where a stream drops over a series of low ledges on its way toward the outlet of Rangeley Lake. This is not a backcountry waterfall. There is no hike, no logging road, and no black flies to endure. You park in town, walk a short path, and find a pretty little cascade surrounded by trees within earshot of Main Street.

What Dingley Falls lacks in height and drama, it makes up for in accessibility and charm. This is a good stop for families with young children, visitors with limited mobility, or anyone who wants to see a waterfall without committing to a trail. It also serves as a warm-up or cool-down stop if you are spending the day chasing the bigger falls in the Rangeley region.

Getting There

Dingley Falls is located near the center of Rangeley village. From Main Street, follow signs toward the town park area. The falls are a short walk from nearby parking on a gentle path. The entire visit, from car to falls and back, takes about 15 minutes.

The cascade is visible from several angles along the park path. There are picnic tables nearby, making this a pleasant spot for a rest.

The Falls

The cascade drops roughly 10 to 12 feet across a series of low ledges where the stream narrows between rock outcrops. The water slides rather than plunges, spreading out across the rock face in a fan pattern. In spring, snowmelt from the surrounding hills pushes the volume up and the falls run with real energy. By midsummer, the flow calms to a gentle trickle, but the rock formations and shaded setting keep the spot attractive.

The rock is dark granite, worn smooth by the water. Moss and ferns grow along the edges of the cascade, and the overhanging birch and maple trees create a canopy that keeps the falls in dappled shade through the day.

Waterfall Day Trip from Rangeley

Rangeley is surrounded by waterfalls. Start your day at Smalls Falls (a roadside cascade on Route 4 with multiple tiers), then hike to Angel Falls (90 feet, about 1.5 miles in), and finish with a relaxing stop at Dingley Falls in town. You can see three very different waterfalls in a single day without driving more than 30 miles.

When to Visit

Spring

best

Best water flow from snowmelt. The cascade runs strongest in May and early June.

Summer

good

Pleasant park setting. Water flow is lower but the falls still run. Good for families.

Fall

good

Foliage color around the falls. A nice complement to a drive through the Rangeley region.

Winter

fair

Accessible year-round, though the falls may freeze. Snow adds a quiet beauty to the setting.

Spring is the best time for water volume. Summer offers the most comfortable conditions for a park visit. Fall foliage in the Rangeley Lakes region is among the best in Maine, and the hardwoods around the falls put on good color in late September and early October.

Local's Tip

Rangeley is a full-service town with restaurants, lodging, gas stations, and a grocery store. If you are spending the day exploring waterfalls in the area, Rangeley makes a good base. The Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust maintains several trails and preserves in the area that are worth exploring between waterfall stops.

Practical Notes

There are no fees or permits required. Parking is free near the park. Restrooms may be available in the park during summer months. Cell service is good in town.

Dogs are welcome on leash. The path to the falls is gentle and may be manageable with a stroller depending on conditions, though it is not paved.
