The Best View in the Rangeley Region

There are taller mountains near Rangeley. Saddleback rises to over 4,000 feet, and Bigelow is not far away. But for the effort-to-reward ratio, nothing in the Rangeley Lakes region beats Bald Mountain. One mile of steady climbing through mixed forest, about 600 feet of elevation gain, and you are standing on open ledges at 2,443 feet with the entire lake region spread out below you. Climb the 30-foot fire tower at the summit and the view opens to a full 360 degrees.

Bald Mountain sits on public reserved land managed by the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands, just east of the village of Oquossoc in Franklin County. The Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust helps maintain the trails. It is the kind of hike you can do in sneakers if the trail is dry, though proper footwear helps on the rocky upper sections. Families with kids, older hikers looking for a manageable summit, and anyone visiting the Rangeley area for the first time should put this one at the top of the list.

The Trail

Two trails lead to the summit. The primary route starts from the Bald Mountain Road trailhead, 0.8 miles down a gravel road off Route 4. The path climbs steadily through birch, spruce, and fir forest, gaining elevation at a consistent grade. The footing is mostly packed dirt and rock, with some root-covered sections in the lower half.

About halfway up, the forest begins to thin and you start catching glimpses of water through the trees. The final quarter-mile breaks out onto open granite ledges where the trail is marked by cairns and blue blazes. This section offers the first real views and is where most people stop to catch their breath.

The summit clearing is small but comfortable, with enough flat rock to spread out for lunch. The fire tower is the main attraction. It is a modern 30-foot observation tower (replacing an older historic fire tower) with a platform at the top. The stairs are sturdy and the views from the top are outstanding.

A second trailhead on Route 4 offers a slightly longer approach. Most hikers use the Bald Mountain Road trailhead because it is shorter and the parking is better.

The Views

From the summit and fire tower, the panorama includes:

  • Mooselookmeguntic Lake spreading out to the south and west, Maine’s fourth-largest lake
  • Rangeley Lake to the east
  • Cupsuptic Lake to the northwest
  • Saddleback Mountain and its ski trails to the northeast
  • Elephant Mountain and the Height of Land to the west
  • On clear days, Mount Washington and the White Mountains of New Hampshire on the western horizon

The lake views are what make this hike special. The Rangeley region has a concentration of large, pristine lakes surrounded by unbroken forest, and seeing them all from one vantage point drives home just how wild this corner of Maine still is.

When to Go

Spring

fair

Trail can be muddy and soft through late May. Blackflies emerge in force by early June.

Summer

good

Dry footing, long days, warm temps. Pair with a swim at Rangeley Lake State Park. Bugs taper off by mid-July.

Fall

best

Peak foliage late September to mid-October. Lake and forest colors are stunning from the tower. Cool, clear air.

Winter

fair

Accessible on snowshoes. Bald Mountain Road may not be plowed. Short enough for a winter summit attempt.

This is a morning hike. Start early, summit by mid-morning, and you have the rest of the day for the lakes, the Height of Land scenic overlook on Route 17, or a paddle on Mooselookmeguntic.

Practical Notes

Local's Tip

After the hike, drive Route 17 south from Oquossoc to the Height of Land overlook. The pulloff is about 15 minutes from the trailhead and gives you a roadside view of Mooselookmeguntic Lake that rivals anything you saw from the summit. It is one of Maine’s best roadside viewpoints.

The parking area has an outhouse but no running water. The gravel road to the trailhead is passable for regular cars when dry. Rangeley village is about 10 minutes away and has restaurants, gas, and supplies. Oquossoc is even closer but has fewer services.

Dogs are welcome on leash. The trail is short enough and gentle enough that most dogs handle it well.

Packing List

Day Hike

  • Water (1 liter is enough for most people)
  • Snack for the summit
  • Light layer for summit wind
  • Camera or binoculars for the fire tower
  • Bug spray (June through mid-July)
  • Sunscreen (exposed ledges near summit)

Getting There

From Rangeley village, head west on Route 4 toward Oquossoc. About one mile past the Route 4/Route 17 intersection in Oquossoc, turn left onto Bald Mountain Road (across from Bald Mountain Camps). Follow the gravel road for 0.8 miles to the trailhead parking on the left.

From Portland, the drive is roughly 2 hours and 50 minutes via Route 4 through Farmington and Phillips.

Parking: Gravel lot with space for about 15 cars. Outhouse on-site. No fee.
