Rumford’s Ridge Hike

Black Mountain rises 2,133 feet above the Rumford area in Oxford County, offering one of the more accessible moderate hikes in western Maine. The 3.6-mile round trip climbs through mixed forest to a summit with views over the Androscoggin and Ellis River valleys. It is a good half-day hike for visitors to the Rumford, Bethel, or Sunday River area who want something more substantial than a short walk but less than a full-day commitment.

The Trail

The trail begins off a road on the north side of Rumford. The first section climbs steeply through hardwoods, gaining about 1,270 feet over 1.8 miles. The grade is steady and the footing is rocky in places, typical of western Maine trails.

As you gain elevation, the hardwoods transition to spruce and fir. The trail follows the ridgeline toward the summit. Open areas along the way provide glimpses of the valley below.

The summit area has partial views. Looking south, the Androscoggin River winds through the valley with the town of Rumford visible below. To the west, the Ellis River valley stretches toward the higher peaks of the western Maine mountains. The surrounding ridges create a layered panorama of forested hills.

Pro Tip

For a longer outing, connect to the Black-White Trail, which links Black Mountain with the Whitecap Mountain area for a 6.6-mile traverse. This requires a car shuttle but offers a more complete ridge experience.
