Portland’s Island Escape

Mackworth Island is a 100-acre island in Casco Bay, connected to the Falmouth shore by a short causeway, just ten minutes from downtown Portland. The island is state-owned and home to the Baxter School for the Deaf, but the perimeter trail and grounds are open to the public for walking, jogging, and enjoying some of the best panoramic views of Casco Bay available from dry land.

The 1.5-mile shoreline loop that circles the island is one of the most popular walks in the Portland area, and for good reason. The path is flat, well-maintained, and traces the water’s edge with continuous views of the bay, the Portland skyline, and the islands stretching toward the horizon. On a clear day, you can see from the White Mountains to the open Atlantic. The walk takes about 45 minutes at a stroll and can be done in sneakers in any season.

Mackworth Island is also home to Maine’s most beloved fairy house village, a sprawling collection of tiny structures built from natural materials in a clearing in the island’s interior. The fairy houses draw families year-round and add a whimsical element to what is otherwise a straightforward coastal walk.

Walk Counterclockwise

Most people walk the perimeter trail clockwise. Going counterclockwise gives you the Portland skyline views first and puts the afternoon sun behind you for better photos. It also means the fairy houses, which are on the western side of the interior, come at the end of your walk rather than the beginning.

The Perimeter Trail

The trail starts at the parking lot just past the causeway and immediately enters the shoreline loop. The path is a mix of packed earth and gravel, flat and wide enough for two people to walk side by side. It never strays more than a few steps from the water’s edge.

Walking counterclockwise, the first section faces southeast with views across the bay to Peaks Island, Diamond islands, and the open ocean beyond. The Portland skyline appears to the south, with the waterfront and the Eastern Promenade visible across the water. This section also passes several small pocket beaches where you can walk down to the water.

The northern side of the island faces the Falmouth shore and the wider bay. The views here are more expansive, with the mainland coastline stretching away in both directions. At low tide, the rocky shore is exposed and tide pools appear in the crevices.

The western side returns you toward the causeway, passing the section of forest where the fairy houses are located. A short spur trail leads into the woods to the fairy village.

Baxter School Campus

The interior of the island is the campus of the Governor Baxter School for the Deaf. Please stay on the perimeter trail and marked paths. Do not enter campus buildings or interrupt school activities. The school and the public trail coexist well, and respect for the campus ensures continued access.

Fairy Houses

The fairy house village at Mackworth Island is a Portland-area institution. Located in a grove of trees just off the perimeter trail, the village consists of dozens (sometimes hundreds) of tiny structures built from sticks, bark, moss, shells, stones, and other natural materials. Some are simple lean-tos; others are elaborate multi-room mansions with doors, windows, and furniture.

The fairy houses are built by visitors of all ages and are continually evolving. Old structures decay naturally and new ones appear regularly. The tradition has been going for decades, and the village has become one of the most-visited family destinations in the Portland area.

Children can build their own fairy houses using materials found on the ground. The only rules: use natural materials only (no plastic, paint, or manufactured items) and do not destroy existing fairy houses. Bringing small treasures like shells or acorn caps to leave as fairy furniture is encouraged.

Local's Tip

The fairy houses are most elaborate in late summer and fall, after a full season of building. Spring houses are smaller and simpler, rebuilt after winter storms. If you want to see the most impressive structures, visit in September. If you want to build with your kids, bring a bag of interesting natural materials, unusual shells, pinecones, moss, to supplement what you find on the ground.
